How 3 Were Influenced By The Doctrine of The Divine Right of Kings

The Doctrine of The Divine Right of Kings stated that a Monarch does not have to follow an authority, it can rule from the will of God. It was therefore a political and religious doctrine. There were a few people who agreed with it, but then some who were against it wholeheartedly. Some of the leaders and disagreed or agreed with it was Oliver Cromwell, James I, and Charles I.

James I became King of Scotland in 1567. Later on he also became King of England in 1603. He was one of the kings that agreed with the Doctrine of The Divine Right of Kings. James thought that he could do whatever he pleased without having to follow authorities like Parliament.

Even though at the time when James disagreed with Parliament there was still a rule that the leadership of England was partnered with the King and Parliament. James still thought that he could to whatever he pleased and change the rule to the way he wanted it to be. That disagreement later resulted in a Civil War with his son as King.

The next ruler was Charles I (James I’s son) and he disagreed with Parliament as well. That conflict even resulted in his execution. Later during his reign he even disbanded the Parliament because he decided to rule on his own. That made Parliament furious and led to an uprising against the King and the Parliamentarian Roundheads. A man named Oliver Cromwell led Parliament and completely disagreed with Charles. After this war Charles was tried in court but for him it didn’t end well. He was guilty of treason and was seen as an enemy to his people.

Oliver Cromwell was a man who became very versed in politics. He was first born into a noble family and later became very successful. But, even though his family was very poor, Oliver was still able to use his family as an advantage. He used his family name to get into politics. After that, he started becoming famous and well known for different things that he did from that point on. Some people, remember him negatively only because of what he ended up doing to the opposing countries against England.

Cromwell was one of the people who completely disagreed with the way the recent kings ruled with following the Doctrine of Divine Right of Kings. He agreed with Parliament and even became a member in 1628. Soon after that he decided to gather up an army to go against Charles I even though he didn’t have much military training. He gathered anyone he could, rich or poor, as long as they could fight. Even though Oliver started out not very versed in battle tactics he became a genius in the end and did amazing in battle.

The only part of his life that people viewed Cromwell negatively was when he was raiding other countries with attacks. Even though some thought that, he came back home to being a very successful man. At the time Parliament was broken up, so Oliver helped to restore the group. Since he was so successful he was later named as the Protectorate of the Commonwealth of England.

So, the Doctrine of The Divine Right of Kings influenced many rulers and even created some uprisings against it as well. Some of the kings followed it word for word while people of Parliament were extremely against it. In result, it affected history along the way.

William of Orange

William was prince of Orange during the 16th century. He was also known as William the Silent. William was very famous for his Dutch revolt against the Spanish which resulted in a victory.

William of Orange was born in 1522 in Germany. At the age of only 11 years old he became a Prince. Now his family’s religion was Lutheran, but there was a condition that for him to become Prince he had to receive a Catholic education. That for William meant switching to a totally different religion basis. Even though that was a big change he did go with that condition and received his education in the Netherlands.

William later married in 1551. He was becoming very successful throughout his life and even got assigned as head of the cavalry. If that wasn’t successful enough, he later got recognized by the emperor Charles V. After that, he became a commander in one of the emperor’s armies.

Throughout his life he was chosen for many great things, it still wasn’t the end for him yet, William then became governor of Holland, Zeeland, and Utrecht. During this time the Netherlands was being ruled by the Spanish, William didn’t like this. Since he started disagreeing about the rule, he joined an opposition group. Specifically he disagreed about the religious persecutions because he was the type of person who believed in religious freedom. William also thought that they were being to controlling and they were ruling too much.

William didn’t want the Spanish to rule any longer so he started to speak up and revolt. He financially went against the Spanish as well. Because of William doing this the Spanish wanted it to end so they called a council meeting to punish him. The only problem was, he didn’t even show up. After that happened he was declared an outlaw and even got his properties taken away from him.

William started to get more and more people backing him and started an army against the Spanish. He started what is known as the Eighty Years’ War. This war lasted all the way up until 1648. But for the Dutch it was worth it because they received a victory and gained their independence from the Spanish.

Unfortunately this war lasted way after William died because right after he was declared an outlaw he was assassinated. He got shot in the chest by a Catholic Frenchman. After he died his son Philip William became Prince of Orange.

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright. He was alive during the Elizabethan era but to this day there are no records of his birth date. William was baptized on April 26 1564. He is one of the greatest writers in history.

William later married Anne Hathaway and had three children. He lived in a small town called Stratford-Upon-Avon where he mostly worked as a writer and an actor. Between 1585 and 1592 William became part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlains Men where they showed lots of Shakespeare’s plays. They were then given a royal patent by James I and changed their name to The King’s Men.

William Shakespeare was best known for his amazing plays. There were different genres of plays that he created. Comedy back then was a little different from the comedy we know of today. His comedy was a story with a happy ending.  Other genres of his plays included:

History: a story that has happened in real life.

Tragedies: a very unhappy story that most likely had a sad ending.

Tragicomedy: It mostly likely had a happy ending.

The King’s Men build a brand new theater called The Globe where they showed more plays. William soon became very rich and was able to buy new place to live that was a pretty big upgrade compared to how he started out.

William later retired and soon after that he died in April 1616.

Even though Shakespeare has been credited with all of his amazing work, there was (and still is) some controversy whether or not he was the one who wrote all of the plays and poems. Some suggest there was a handful of people who were writers in some of Shakespeare’s works like:

17th Earl of Oxford

Francis Bacon

Christopher Marlowe

6th Earl of Derby

Overall William Shakespeare influenced the English language over time. He even influenced some of the later authors like Charles Dickens. Although we will never know if there was anybody else who took part in some of the writings and if William was the actual writer of some of them.
